Vintage Navajo Tree of Life Woven Rug by Lena Begay 30” x 26”
Navajo weaver Lena Begay made this lovely hand woven rug out of wool. Alluring colors compliment the Tree of Life design. A cornstalk is growing out of a wedding basket. Among the stalks are 27 birds and flowers.
Neatly woven and well balanced, this magnificent rug would be a great addition to your Native American art or Navajo rug collection.
This rug from my mothers personal collection. She was a professor of Education at Western New Mexico University. At WNMU, she helped establish the Graduate Studies Center in Gallup, N.M., that focused on educating Navajo women-work for which she was honored as a hero by the Navajo nation.
She was friends with many of the local artists and her items were either purchased from the artists themselves, local merchants, or received as gifts from students and/or fellow faculty.
Many of her pieces are unique and we’re commissioned directly from the artist.
