Story:

One of the first public buildings in Liberty Falls was the original firehouse on Main Street. The local folks were proud as punch of this modest little building with its horse-drawn fire engine. And they appreciated the bravery and unselfishness of their volunteer fire department. Why, that first year alone the volunteers put out three house fires, and saved the Prairie Church from what might otherwise have been a complete re-build, with their prompt and efficient efforts.

Times changed and equipment improved—not to mention the fact that Liberty Falls itself expanded its borders and welcomed hundreds of new families and businesses to this thriving Colorado community. So by the year 1900 the Liberty Falls town fathers realized it would be prudent to do three things. First, they invested in a second firehouse, christened “Fire Engine House #2.” Second, they hired the first paid fire captain and several full-time fire fighters to be supplemented by the stalwart local volunteers. And third, they budgeted for new engines for both the old and new firehouses. Sooner rather than later, they knew the old horse-drawn equipment would and should be replaced by “horseless carriages”—and they wanted to be ready! At the ribbon cutting for the new firehouse, Mayor Willie Griffin praised the volunteer firefighters for their courage and unselfishness—and awarded each one a special medal of honor with the thanks of all Liberty Falls citizens.
