Story:

What with all his work down at City Hall, Mayor Willie Griffin had very little time to care for his home. So it was lucky for him that his wife, Gertrude Griffin, was very much a homebody and quite handy with both household care and maintenance. The Griffins’ stately house with its Queen Anne-inspired porch, “widow’s walk”-style, third-story tower and garden gazebo gave Gertrude ample opportunity to show off her skills. Some days the Mayor would come home to find her painting or wallpapering the walls; other days she was knitting multi-striped afghans to use as “throws” on her horsehair sofas and chairs. On the evenings when the Mayor had City Hall meetings, Gertrude would invite a group of lady friends in for card games and lemonade—and she’d serve cookies and other treats made from her own favorite recipes. “Most of the men folk are down at City Hall anyway,” she’d tell her guests. “So why should we wait alone at home? I’ll make sure we all have a jolly time!” When her lady friends left, Gertrude would always send them home with a tin filled with cookies or muffins, and a recipe or two for good measure. She was just as popular and beloved on the “home front” as her husband was in the Liberty Falls political world!
