Story:

In the early days of Liberty Falls, plenty of small-time gaming went on in the local saloons and bars—but until the “Mountain Nugget Gambling Hall” opened a mile out of town, the city had never had an emporium formally devoted to roulette, blackjack, and other games of chance. Opulently decorated with gaslights, red furniture, and flocked wallpaper, the gambling hall evoked immediate outrage on the part of the temperance community and the deeply religious.

“Gambling is sinful… and who knows what other loose living will go on within those walls,” read the official condemnation of the local Temperance Society. Indeed, the Town Council refused to provide the gambling hall with a liquor license, as its own method of mild condemnation. But in practice, all that meant was that the gamblers brought their own flasks along! Although those in “polite society” were afraid to be seen in the gambling hall, the place had plenty of customers. In fact, some folks even arrived in town by train to partake of the “Mountain Nugget Gambling Hall’s” delights…so many that Mayor Willie Griffin eventually had to admit that the hall had a very positive effect on the local economy, and even its tax base!
