Story:

When Muriel Phillips and her husband Raymond first built their lovely home in Liberty Falls, it was meant to be a private residence. But after Raymond’s untimely death in 1884, Mrs. Phillips found the handsome structure empty and lonely. Back in Boston, she had been trained in all the ladylike arts: especially music. So with the enthusiastic support of Liberty Falls families, she began taking on pupils to share her vast knowledge of piano and violin. When Mrs. Phillips could convince even the lively DuBois twins that music was an enjoyable pastime, word of her gift for teaching traveled swiftly. Before long, this kindly lady—whose walls boasted portraits of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and several members of the Bach family—renamed her home the “Muriel Phillips’ Piano and Violin School.” Her pupils’ yearly recitals represented one of the high points of the Liberty Falls social calendar, and many a young man earned his first pair of long pants as a reward for his performance at Mrs. Phillips’ elegant baby grand.
