Story:

Gourmet cooking? No such thing at the Old Homestead Restaurant. But for those who relished their “three squares a day,” the Smoots’ menu was just what the doctor ordered! Mr. and Mrs. Smoots lived above their family business: they had a separate entrance up the stairs to the side of the building. This allowed them easy access to the kitchen first thing in the morning, because by 11 a.m. their welcoming dining room would be chock-full of customers ready to eat. After a lull from about 2 to 5 p.m., another onslaught of hungry diners showed up and kept coming until the “closed” sign went on the door about 8:30 p.m.

What brought all these enthusiastic eaters to sit at the Smoots’ tables with their red-and-white checked cloths and blue-and-white china? Mrs. Smoots’ chicken and dumplings… her homemade stews and soups… her fresh-baked pumpkin pies and apple tarts! Who was the best cook in town? Well, Mrs. Wilson at The Wooden Nickel was known for plain-yet-wholesome fare, so most folks would consider it a contest between Mrs. Smoots of the Old Homestead and Mrs. Applegate of the Boarding House.
