Story:

Perhaps the first “book superstore” ever was “Owen Conkling’s Books and Stationery” in downtown Liberty Falls. Owen was very glad he’d bought a 100-foot width of prime land, because he’d barely gotten his store off the ground when he found he needed more space. Within a year of first opening, he doubled the size of his store and kept up a bustling trade. Owen had a sixth sense about what would sell to the Liberty Falls folks. For instance, he was the first to bring in a shipment of the best-seller, Prospecting Made Easy: a real page-turner for all those hoping to strike it rich in gold or silver.

As Owen expanded, he tried to offer something special for everyone. He displayed children’s books, and called upon Abigail Martin for advice on which new titles were best suited for her students’ learning and enjoyment. He purchased stationery and offered a service in conjunction with Ben Cummings for personalization of letterhead and envelopes. He even offered fountain pens, which became the Liberty Falls “gifts of choice” for high school and college graduation. And much to the delight of the readers in town, Owen would even convene discussion groups for everything from classic novels to the latest “how-to” volumes.
