Story:

With all the building going on in Liberty Falls, the grand opening of Donald Short’s “Timberline Lumber” was welcome news indeed for local carpenters. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Short learned the lumbering trade there during the mid-1800s: cutting down old-growth forest for Grand Rapids’ famous furniture makers. As the Michigan lumber supply dwindled and labor unrest threatened, Short made up his mind to seek greener pastures in the West.

While some of the more exotic woods had to be “imported” from Back East or even Europe or South America, Short found ample supplies of pine and other native timber to cut and process in Colorado. And he soon enjoyed a fast friendship with Fred Cox, the furniture and coffin maker. Seems the two men shared a keen appreciation for fine woods and cabinetry and Short learned many of Cox’s “tricks of the trade” to practice in his own amateur furniture-building shop. Why, the two men even joined forces to create an elegant mahogany podium as a gift to the Liberty Falls Town Council—the very podium Mayor Willie Griffin stands behind to run the Council’s monthly meetings!
